Du Magic Paint Gel Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Du Magic Paint Gel different to conventional car paint?

We have been paint repairers since 1989; our chemists formulated Du Magic Paint Gel to our design. Du Magic Paint Gel chemistry utilizes leading technologies like nano particles. Our research team started from the ground up – the aim was for a product that is so simple to apply that ‘everyday people’ could repair damage to near body shop quality in only seconds.

The benefits include high film build, slower drying, fast setting and fast shrink by hairdryer, easy application, precise repair positioning, accurate repair height. The low VOCs not only help the environment, they are also much safer than conventional car paints.

Our goal of "every day people" was so that repairers could expand by employing friends (not tradesmen) to grow their business. A training time of minutes means expansion is viable.

So that you obtain these benefits repairers will need to follow the instructions. Especially current repairers who are used to other paint system will need to learn to obtain these benefits.

Is Du Magic suitable for mobile repairers?

All of our repair systems are designed for mobile repairing, they are designed so that we repair at the car's location. Every one of our repair elements are miniaturized which saves valuable minutes finding keys and moving multiple cars. This can save repairers valuable hours a week.

Du Magic Paint Gel was designed for our Australian Duco Magic technicians use. They are van based in cities near ice and snow like Canberra (Australia's national capital), Bendigo and Hobart etc. Others repair in tropical conditions like in Darwin, Mackay, Cairns, and Townville. However the viability of repairs in the snow of Alaska, Northern Canada, Siberia or Norway etc., would make any repairs difficult without heated premises.

How do you repair in cool weather?

Du Magic Paint Gel withstands -10C (14F), so that it is suitable for air freight. For areas like Calgary in Canada that experience -30C (-22F) in winter, mobile repairers work in warmed workshops and store the product indoors overnight. They then store Du Magic Paint Gel in a fridge to stop the Du Magic freezing. Ordinary car paint would have major problems with those conditions.

For temperatures below 20C (68F) set the Du Magic Paint Gel repair with a hairdryer for 15 seconds.

Is Du Magic Paint Gel damaged by high humidity or similar conditions?

In damp conditions conventional car paints can dry with a frost, blushing or blooming. This causes darker paint colours to dry white.

Our chemists designed Paint Gel so that it doesn't frost, blush or bloom. However in such condition the repairer must set the Du Magic repair for 15 seconds with a hairdryer on the hot setting or it may wash out with overnight dew or rain.

How do you repair on hot days?

For hot days the car is best repaired in the shade. Whilst this is preferably indoors, our Australian technicians use their body’s shade for smaller areas, so they still repair outside.

Ways of doing this include:

  • cover the damage area with damp bath towels and repair under the towels shade.
  • use a market umbrella or other portable shade device,
  • cool small repair areas with water and dry it prior to cleaning - then use your body to shade the area for repairing.

The repairer also needs water, so it is a convenient product to carry!

In extreme heat over 30C (86F) conventional car paints boil before they set, this results in bubbles in the paint and therefore ugly repairs. Instead cool the repair area with water.

How do I know your repair standards ?

When we released our CPP repair system in 2001 our “REPAIR STANDARD” became “an owner or car buyer cannot see damage from 1.2 metres (4 feet)”.

This meticulous standard is also demanded by Ford, GM and Toyota inspectors of car rental cars (like Hertz and Avis) when the cars are handed back at end of lease – these cars are typically 9 to 15 months old and must look 'like new' to car buyers. These inspectors have passed Du Magic repairs.

Is a hairdryer necessary on cooler days or in damp conditions?

Yes. Our chemists designed Du Magic Paint Gel so that it dries slowly - this extra time allows professional repairers to manipulate adjust the paint. Normal car paints must dry fast to prevent runs however they provide little work time and dry lumpy or with brush marks.

Setting Du Magic Paint Gel with the hairdryer on 'hot' for 15 seconds per area sets the Paint Gel. Setting prevents overnight dew or rain washing out the Du Magic Paint Gel. Du Magic Paint Gel is only for repairing, follow the Du Magic Paint Gel instructions for a simple and easy way to restore a near respray look in only a few seconds. Of course metre or yard long scratches may take 2 minutes!

How else can a hairdryer assist repairers?

For faster repairs use the hairdryer on "hot' for 30 seconds per area. A second coat can then be applied for fast durable repairs. Deep damage will need need multiple coats to fill.

Can I overfill the damage like using a putty then later sand the repair level?

Yes, however this will lose the speed of the Du Magic ‘wipe and trim’ application system?

Does Du Magic Paint Gel “shrink” over time like other touch-up paints?

All paints shrink as the solvent liquids evaporate. Our chemists formulated Du Magic for ‘maximum solids’, it retains about half its height. After application on deeper damage set again with a hairdryer on "hot" for 30 seconds per area. Then repair again to build more height.

The result is not like car paints that can continue shrinking for many months or even years. Instead, Du Magic Paint Gel was formulated to shrink mostly in 30 seconds using a hairdryer on the 'hot' setting. This ‘wipe, trim and set ’ process makes repairs to deep damage very fast.

No – the Du Magic Paint Gel does not run on vertical surfaces when correctly applied.
